Gateway
No dell under any circumstance
either ibm lenovo thinkpads, or an apple macbook or macbook pro
I like gateway, but, that’s just me. Their tablet computers are really great.
Laptops are the way to go if you’re a commuter… oh, wait, you want to know about a computer… but, the only reason a laptop is better is if you’re going to take it to class. if you’re living in the dorms, a big computer is safer… because laptops have a way of “walking away”
Also, you’ll be a freshman… there is only one ‘a’ in that word.
It is definitely more convient to have a laptop since you can take it to class and group meetings. Dell would be a ripoff parts and service wise. Hp would be better along with Mac if you are into those
A good company to consider is Carbonfrost Systems. I can speak from experience when I say they have the best warranty and service.
They are also launching their laptops in couple of weeks, and their computers are actually better than all of those specs for the computers you would see in Dell, HP, Acer etc and is cheaper while thier parts are all name brand parts. Just a little info for you.
They will have laptops in all price ranges with the best parts and service so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that suits you the besthttp://www.carbonfrost.com/

Do NOT get a Dell. Get an HP, Toshiba, or an Acer. They, including Dell, are the top 4 computer manufacturers in the World.
Edit:
DO NOT GET A DELL!!!!! (or a Mac)
As a freshman going to college as well, I think that the best brand of laptops are Dell and HP, but ultimately it is up to the persons own preferences. I think that a laptop is much better than a desktop to have in college since it very versatile and you can take it with you just in case you dont want to be in your dorm/apartment.
Gateways are really good I’ve had mine at college for the past 3 years and its still really fast and I haven’t had any problems with it.
i loved having a laptop in college (or anytime actually). it’s just nice to be able to leave the desk and sit on the couch or in bed and work.
now as for brands… i can tell you i definitely do not recommend Toshiba. it was a pretty pricey computer and i’ve had many problems. luckily enough it was under warranty but it has been a real hassle and i had multiple things stop working (keyboard, speaker, power cord, etc.)
my first laptop was a Dell and i had it for 3 years with no problems… loved it!
GOOD LUCK!!
I think it’s more convenient to have a laptop and a printer. I bought a Toshiba which is alright, but my husband bought a Compaq. He paid less money than I did and I like his a lot better.
Good luck! I think asking on this site is a really good way to get a lot of informed opinions.
Apple…..hands down…no comparison. Nothing even comes close. Buy a MacBook.
It truly depends on how you like to study. If you are the kind of person that likes to do all their work in their bedroom, then a desktop might be a better solution. If you are the kind of person that needs a quiet environment, then a laptop might be a better solution.
the only advantage a laptop has over a desktop is portable, otherwise a desktop beats it in every way (price, value/money spent, reliability, upgradablity).
My degrees were in chemistry and psychology, so i spent alot of time at my desk doing homework. so a desktop was perfect for me.
A lot of colleges are pushing laptops, cause they have some sort of finacial agreement with that company (dell’s a big one), Laptops have a higher profit margin then desktops.
if you truly want a laptop, i like the ones from HP (great phone support, cheap price, good build quailty), toshiba (good value for money, good build quality, mediocre phone support), and fijitusi (great product, it’s what all the hospitals use, super reliablity, build like tanks, but they are expensive)
APPLE!!!!!!
Ive been through about 4 computers in the past five years and nothing beats my macbook. its RELIABLE!!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure that when u are making your selection you look closely at warranty policies and instore vs. out-of-the store computer maintenance.
As far as a laptop or desktop…..i prefer laptops because in most classes you can now take your laptop and write your notes (much better than using paper).
Toshiba makes the best laptops. You should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 for college.
Its alot more convinent to have a laptop, seeing as how you can travel with it and take it places with you.
I have an Apple Macbook, and i absolutely love it.
Its fast, and works great.
However, if you are a windows user, you might find it a little weird.
But i know a few windows-born users who switched to Macs, and they loved it.
It all depends on personal preference.
But Apple has great customer service, and a very thouroughly informed website.
The macbook comes with a built-in wireless internet card, so getting on the internet is incrediably easy.

i have an HP and itrs really convient and its durable and looksnice. hope it helps
A laptop is better for college.
I would choose an HP laptop. I’ve had good luck with them as an HP Certified Accredited Platform Specialist with them.
As far as the convenience part of the question, I’ve had a laptop and it has definitely made college life much easier. I type a lot faster than I write, though.
I have a macbook, but if you want to major in something that requires using specific programs (engineering, architecture, etc.) then you might want to check with the school as far as what laptop you want to purchase. If you’re just going to use it to take notes and as a personal computer, though, you can’t go wrong with a refurbished macbook from apple!
I prefer you ‘hp’ laptops as the best one. Even I have the same and it’s working very well.
I would say either Dell or mac. You should email your computer center at your new college though and see what they support – some colleges are heavy into one brand or another, and may provide free support for a specific one over another.
I work for residential Networking on my college campus, also called Resnet. You can call them on your campus and they will tell you the best advice for your school. (This is mainly all I do while working in the summer – answer computer questions for incoming students.)
For example, Dell Laptops are good because they are relatively inexpensive and you can buy a four year warranty that if anything happens to it while in school you could get it fixed. Apple also has great deals for students, but you would be paying much more than a dell, however, some would say it is more than worth it…
The best is to call your school’s Resnet and ask them their opinion.
