One Laptop Per Child Changes Developing Nations with New Linux XO-3 Tablet
Announced only a week ago, watch to see how Linux is making a real difference in underdeveloped nations. Learn more: one.laptop.org and http In many countries around the world, technology is a luxury most cannot afford. One group is helping the situation through a program called OLPC – One Laptop Per Child. This program provides children, who would otherwise likely never see computers or other tech gadgets, with a cost-effective, rugged laptop powered by solar energy and running the free Fedora Linux distribution. These laptops have made an incredible impact on the lives and future of millions of children. This program really speaks to me; it was a privilege for me to sit down with Marvell, makers of the processor & other chips found in the OLPC XO-3 tablet. www.marvell.com Photo credits: One Laptop Per Child, Original Model – www.flickr.com OLPC Students India: www.flickr.com and OLPC Love – www.flickr.com

@keithunix It’s a play on words, open source, open sores, It’s a joke, that implies open source is bad, but jokes aren’t funny if you have to explain them
@S4lamander Cry about it.
I did a lot of beta testing back when I had my xo-1, I loved that thing!
This is super-wonderfull :3
Crazy shit. I want this!
@nixiedoeslinux How can I get one?
About time they did a tablet. Love the solar panel option.
I love the positive move forward seen here.. but I fail to see why kids in our own countries get over looked. Why not help Canadian and American children as well?
Microsoft or Apple would never do this because they’re shit!
yes… because children in developing nations need tablets :/
@Ograws that’s a ridiculous thing to say, go look up the bill and melinda gates foundation. you’re half right though, microsoft and apple wouldnt do this, not because they’re shit (which they certainly are not) but because they are businesses… ie they want to make money
exaahhhhctly.
saving the world by enabling opressed people to be absorbed more deeply into the ideology that keeps them in an opressed state in the first place.
do they have an app called “this is why you deserve to starve, kiddos!” and they’re supposed to be greatful for the handout???
lol did ford power EVERYONES ces coverage?
@Ograws Microsoft Windows released Windows 7 Home Basic for this. Apple didn’t do much.
You didn’t ask if they are going to do a buy one get one with the tablets?
They stole “jack”, Cingular’s logo!
@marcusrehn The US already gives out a ton of aid. Not everyone in the third world is on the brink of starvation. So this company wants to give poor people a way to connect to the world around them and learn things that they would never be able to before, what’s wrong with that? The Third World makes up over half the world’s population, so its only fair that they have the same opportunities as us. Dont denounce a good thing just bc it isn’t the solution to all the world’s problems.
@martini1179 Get adblockers…I’ve never even seen an in-vid advertisement bc I’ve had adblockers since last year
Laptops do not make opportunity. A motivated child APPLYING themselves makes opportunity. Social justice has no place in any economy. Hard work does.
Beggars can’t be choosers, those of us who live in third world countries appreciate whatever form of ‘support’ come our way. Folks who talk about ‘motivation creating opportunity, have obviously never lived in a third world country. Laptops, like farming implements, or school backpacks are tools, better than giving food or water. Food or water hand outs don’t create opportunity, tools do. It’s up to every child given a ‘tool’ to act on that opportunity.
@starsiegeplayer Its about the fact that the money could be used better, there are still people starving out there.
@daze708 Its not that its not good, its that the money could be used better. Food, water or medicine.
@daze708 Kind of the way religion comes to starving people and bring bibles
This will change the world! Until Apple decides it looks too much like an iPad & has it banned…
everything up to 8th grade your better of using pencil and paper and using the money to hire better teachers
