Next time tell us what the name of the virus you need to remove. It is difficult to give you a good answer without this.
==================
Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.
In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.
Right click on "my computer"> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn off system restore
After the malware is removed turn on system restore.

To run in “Safe Mode” read:

If this still does not work, install AVG, update and rescan in safe mode.

Since you have AVG antivirus, go open the program and run a scan. Should remove it.
See if you can remove the virus with the AVG software. If you can’t remove the virus with AVG, go to the Dell security website to have your pc scanned for free to remove the virus. I’d recommend Trend Micro. It isn’t as hard as it sounds, just scan, remove and you’re done! Here’s the website: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/security/security_scan?c=us&l=en&s=gen. Take it easy. Advice for next time: After you download something, save it, don’t run it. This insures that the virus is removed before you open the file and no problems arise. Good luck!
I’ve got AVG and it usually works ’bout 90% of the time; if not, get this program by Iobit called Advanced Windows Care V2 Personal: this is FREE (no money, honey) and you run it before you shut down and it finds all kinds of temp files, missing files, viruses, spyware, etc. i think it found my dog in there the other day (just kidding). Check out the site and decide for yourself; your pc will even start much faster every time…mine does.

For your PC to be OK, you have to protect it from viruses and hackers!
The virus is a small program that attach itself to other files from your computer and can harm your computer, by restarting it, freezing it or even by deleting your files or stealing your personal information.
To keep your computer safe from viruses you have to use an anti-virus program, like Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, Avast, Antivir, McAfee, Bit Defender. Some are free and others have trial versions.
Here you have some links to download the free versions of some of the best anti-virus programs, as well as other security tools:
