How do I get two laptops communicating with each other?
Okay, I have one Vista laptop connected to a Buffalo router via wired connection (it can be wireless if need be) and one XP laptop connected to the router via wireless connection. I’m sure it’s something simple that I’m missing, but how do I get the two laptops communicating with each other for file sharing? I have a buch of stuff on my old XP laptop that I want to send to the new Vista one, and it would be really nice to do that via a network instead of copying it all to flash drives!

(This is for XP, don’t have Vista, but hopefully it is roughly the same)
1. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
Go up a level (third icon from the left), then open "My Network Places".
Hopefully it will show the other computer as an icon.
Open this, and hopefully there will be a shared folder where you can copy stuff across to.
2. If this fails, try it on the other computer.
3. If it still fails, then switch off any firewalls on both computers and try again on both computers.
Remember to switch the firewalls back on again after you’ve finished.
4. If there is an icon for the other computer, but no shared folder to copy stuff to, then you need to share a folder.
Open "My Computer" again.
Right-click on the C drive and choose "Sharing and security", click on the "New Share" button, enter a name (doesn’t matter what) and say OK.
Repeat for the other computer. Then try steps 1 and 2 again.
Hopefully the C drive is now shared and you can copy stuff across.
Remember to remove the shares again when you’re finished.
5. If you still can’t see either computer then press "start" (bottome left), then choose "Run…", then type CMD and press OK.
You should get a black box you can type into.
Type ipconfig and press Return.
You should get a line saying IP address and four numbers separated by dots (e.g. 10.15.20.25)
Write these down.
Go to the other computer, open Explorer, and in the address line type \\ followed by the IP address, followed by \c$
e.g. \\10.15.20.25\c$
Hopefully you should now be able to see the C drive of the other computer and copy files across.
6. If this fails, repeat using the computers the other way round.
hey let me tell u i have a laptop using xp and another computer using vista and i wanted to share the files as well ..i just bought in a lan wire and had all the job done
if u are really interested to get ur job done then connect using a lan wire then in the win xp computer go to my network places s
and then set up a home or office network and then ignore disconnected hardware and then select other option .. then select this network connects to a network that doesnt hav a internet connection and then proceed till u get it ask u to create a network set up disk insert a flash drive and click ok
then carry this flash drive and insert in to the other computer and press it remember both the computers should hav a same work group name then …
u gotta go to the network connections and right click on the lan conection icon ..this is imp see carefully in properties double click on internet protocol and assign some ip address
lik esay 192.168.1.2 then in subnet mask itll fill automatically then in the default gateway enter 192.168.1.3 or some thing press ok
do similarly in the vista computer give different ips then go to fire wall and disable it also u got to take off password protection while sharing option in vista ,….
firstly, get this two cmputers on the same workgroup i.e pc1norman pc2-norman too, this way they are in the same family and they can share and see each other cos if they are not in the same workgroup they cannot c each other and as a result they can’t share files.
secondly, assing a static ip address to the pcs.e.g 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 this way you have created a route for the .howerver u can still ask the two pcs to obtain ip address automatically .
after all this restart both computers and click on your network icon on your desktop scroll down to view computers on same workgroup tht is on xp and double click on it you should be able to c the other computer and if you c it . just highlight the doc you want to send and move them to the new computer after you have scan with an abtiviruse to be sure there are no viruses there .
hope these help.
